Arkansas State football coach Blake Anderson has stepped away from his duties while his wife battles cancer.

The university announced Monday Anderson is taking an indefinite leave of absence to be with his wife, Wendy, and his family.

Assistant head coach and defensive coordinator David Duggan will serve as the Red Wolves' interim head coach until Anderson returns.

"I know there has been an outpouring of support for Coach Anderson, Wendy and their family, not only locally, but nationally," Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Terry Mohajir said in a statement.

"Coach Anderson has expressed how grateful his family is for all the thoughts and prayers, and we are also thankful for everyone’s support.”

At Arkansas State, Anderson has compiled a record of 39-25 and led the Red Wolves to a bowl game in each of his five seasons as head coach.
